Harrisonburg Police Department Major Crimes Unit - Criminal Investigations Division

Cold Cases fall under the responsibility of investigators in the Major Crimes Unit, Criminal Investigations Division at Harrisonburg Police Department. Investigators are responsible for investigating unsolved homicides and crimes involving missing persons in Harrisonburg City.

Currently, we have listed the unsolved homicide cases in Harrisonburg. The victims of these cases are gone but not forgotten, and we hope to bring peace to the families who lost loved ones, educate the public on historical cases, and most importantly, canvass for more information that can be used to bring criminals to justice.

Sgt. Trenary who was murdered in 1959Sergeant Manuel Walker Trenary, Case Number 2012-049766

Sergeant Manuel Walker Trenary was shot and killed at 225 N. Liberty St. as he investigated a burglary in progress at L&S Diner on October 8, 1959. He was struck by a .25-caliber bullet while exchanging gunfire with the suspect, who was never identified. In 2022, a rededication of a special street sign was completed in memory of Sgt. Trenary. He left behind his beloved wife when he passed. 

 

 

Thomas Lofton, who was murdered in 1981.Thomas Lofton, A.K.A. John Hart, Case Number 81-01-30-0163

On January 29, 1981, Thomas Lofton was forced to exit his residence on Clinton St. with a sweatshirt covering his face. Lofton was shot and killed on the doorstep of his home by an unknown individual wearing a trench coat and wielding a blue revolver. The suspect drove away and has yet to be identified. 

 

 

Kelly Bergh Dove, who was abducted in 1982

Kelly Bergh Dove, Case Number 82-06-18-1146

Kelly Bergh Dove was working the night shift at the Imperial gas station on S. Main Street on June 18, 1982, when she called the police to report a man calling and harassing her. After making two reports in the same evening, Kelly was abducted from her workplace. She left behind a husband, daughter, and family. Her case remains unsolved today. 

 

 

Robin Roadcap, who was murdered in 1987

Robin Sue Roadcap, Case Number 1997-000267

Robin Sue Roadcap was found strangled in her bathtub at her residence on Vine St. on January 6, 1997. DNA technology has been helpful in narrowing down a list of suspects, but her case remains unsolved.
