The City has a Public Tree Advisory Board that governs the policies and guidelines of the Public Tree Ordinance for the planting, removal, and maintenance of trees within public street right-of-way, and when necessary other types of vegetation. The applications to plant, prune, or remove trees are provided below. If you have questions about the Public Tree Ordinance, contact the Public Works Department.

 

Planting or Removal

A permit from the public tree advisory board must be obtained before planting or removing any public tree. To obtain a permit, fill out the appropriate application below and submit to the Public Works Department at publicworks@HarrisonburgVA.gov. Applications can also be made online. Applications for permits shall be made no less than thirty (30) days in advance of the time the work is desired to be done. 

 

Pruning

A permit from the public tree advisory board must be obtained before pruning any public tree. To obtain a permit, fill out the appropriate public access permit application. Applications for permits shall be made no less than thirty (30) days in advance of the time the work is desired to be done.
