Records

Under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) you have the right to examine public records.

Michael Parks, Harrisonburg's FOIA Officer, handles any official FOIA requests.

Anyone wishing to file a FOIA request may contact the City Manager's Office at 540-432-7701 or by visiting the City Manager’s Office on the third floor of City Hall at:
409 South Main Street
Harrisonburg, VA 22801

You also can email Michael.Parks@Harrisonburgva.gov.

The City of Harrisonburg may charge a fee for records requested under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act that is based on the hourly rate of the individual or individuals who search for and review the records in question, plus any costs associated with physical items needed to complete a request such as the cost of an electronic storage device used to provide records to a requestor, printed pages, mailing and postage, etc. The City always uses the lowest paid staff member capable of retrieving and reviewing requested records in order to keep costs at a minimum to the requestor. The City maintains the right to waive these fees when possible depending on the time required to respond to a request. The City FOIA Officer will inform a requestor of any anticipated estimated fees before moving forward on completing a request.

In addition, the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council is available to answer any questions you may have about FOIA. The council may be contacted by phone at 804-225-3056 or toll free at 1-866-448-4100 or by emailing foiacouncil@dls.virginia.gov.
