Every spring the Public Works Department begins its annual paving of roadways throughout Harrisonburg.
This maintenance program resurfaces prioritized City streets based on the condition of the asphalt.
Crews mill and repave the streets. The milling operation consists of removing approximately 1 ½ to two inches of old pavement and replacing it with new asphalt several days later.
While there are no anticipated street closures, there will be interruptions to the regular flow of traffic in the areas where milling and paving will be taking place. The area will be well-marked with signs to alert motorists.
Motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution when traveling around crews working along the roadway.
Repaving provides an opportunity to change the configuration of lanes, or other pavement markings on the road, at a minimal cost. City staff has found several opportunities for changes that align with the City’s transportation plans. For more information about the proposed changes in 2024, visit our Roadway Reconfigurations webpage. The City is excited to note that ADA accessibility upgrades will take place alongside the paving schedule. These upgrades may require adjustments to schedule as they take place. For more information about the City's efforts with enhancing ADA accessibility in public transportation facilities, visit the ADA Transition Plan webpage.
