Public Works staff has a plan, to formalize that plan we recently received a 2020 Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Grant to help create an Urban Forest Management Plan as well as a cost-share grant aimed at helping purchase additional trees to replace ones that have been lost.
The City will be hosting a volunteer tree planting opportunity at Northend Greenway. Members of the community are invited to participate in the tree planting event.
The Harrisonburg Conservation Assistance Program (HCAP) is an urban cost share program that provides financial incentives and technical assistance to property owners installing stormwater projects in Harrisonburg.

Stormwater runoff was causing severe erosion next to one of the bridges in Purcell Park. The area was regraded, concrete was poured where the gully used to be, and rip-rap was added for reinforcement. Jute mesh was put down and the area was seeded with a native seed mix.

30 trees were planted next to Purcell Park Pond, along Blacks Run. The trees extend the riparian buffer area and provide added filtration of stormwater and provide positive impacts to the water quality in the stream.
Volunteers and city staff planted 20 trees at Thomas Harrison Middle School on October 4, 2018. The trees were planted along the sidewalk as well as the road leading up to the middle school and will provide shade, stormwater uptake, and habitat for native fauna.
