- Project Date: June 2008
- Partner: Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and Shenandoah Soil and Water Conservation District
- Funding: Grant provided by the Water Quality Improvement Fund through the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation
The Model Home Showcase Nights showcased several urban best management practices (BMPs) that several homeowners in the Cooks Creek and Blacks Run watersheds had installed through the grant. Their rain gardens were engineered and installed free of charge to the homeowners. The participants also received rain barrels, pet waste digesters and composters, all paid for by grant funds. The way the homeowners received these BMPs was by entering an essay contest telling why their backyards deserved a "conservation makeover". This grant helped immensely to implement urban water quality solutions and addressed the urban component of the Cooks Creek and Blacks Run Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Implementation Plan.
