The City of Harrisonburg’s Public Works Department, along with the Stormwater Advisory Committee (SWAC), will host an final public meeting for the stormwater improvement plan.

On Wednesday, October 18, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, an open house will be held, where citizens are invited to learn more about the updated stormwater improvement plan and ask questions. This event will be held in Council Chambers at City Hall, 409 S. Main St., and will be in an open house format with no formal presentation.

Throughout the past year, the City has undergone extensive research on how to best invest stormwater utility fee funds to filter, control, and treat polluted runoff before it reaches local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay.

“Our focus has developed a plan that will improve local water quality through stormwater projects and broaden the scope of stormwater programs to meet the federal and state requirements,” explained Kelley Junco, Public Works Department’s Environmental Compliance Manager.

Input from citizens was first received at an open house in March, the plan was revised, and now the community is invited back to review the final proposed plan, view maps of potential projects, and learn more about programs that will help the city meet pollutant reduction goals.

Residents are welcome to share their thoughts and ideas through a discussion posted on www.BeHeardHarrisonburg.org. The public comment period will be open from October 18 (after the meeting) until November 1.

After the public comment period ends, the Stormwater Improvement Plan will be presented to Harrisonburg Planning Commission and then to Harrisonburg City Council.
